The Charleston, WV experience.
Charleston is the capital of West Virginia, located in the valley of the Allegheny Mountains. Although it is the capital, Charleston is a quaint town that doesn’t have the hectic hustle and heavy population of a larger capital city like Chicago, Illinois. In a state that is nestled into the mountains and immersed in local wilderness, Charleston feels like that charming small town where everyone is a friend.
Even though Charleston is a small town, it does not mean it doesn’t have its own characteristics and things to offer. Downtown, you can find the University of Charleston and even Capitol Street for a little retail therapy. There are many businesses, boutiques, and mom-and-pop shops that are unique to Charleston! As you walk amongst the historic buildings, you will also find Capitol Market, a non-profit farmers market that is dedicated to supporting small businesses. You will find locally grown fruits and veggies, meats, cheeses, handmade gifts, wines, and much more. Downtown Charleston also hosts multiple annual events to celebrate and bring the community together. In the summer months, Live at the Levee is taken place at Haddad Riverfront Park. Here you can listen to live music from local bands and artists while enjoying cuisines from local vendors. Every third Thursday of each month is the Art Walk where residents can sip on free drinks and view locally created art. In June, the annual FestivALL multi-arts festival is held and widely attended by the community. Ten days are celebrated with music, theater, dance, visual arts, and more. FestivALL has over 200 partners and sponsors, 100 plus events, more than 50 venues, and over 800 artists and performers. Multifest is another widely attended event that brings together cultural and ethnic communities. Similar to FestivALL, there is live music, talent shows, open mics, kids’ activities, and endless vendors. This event strives to enrich, develop, and enhance multiculturalism in the community of Charleston, West Virginia, and neighboring towns.
Because Charleston is tucked into nature, there are many outdoor activities to take part in. Kanawha State Forest is the most popular park in the area as it is known for having over 60 miles of hiking and biking trails. You can even go fishing here at Davis Creek, a natural flowing stream that is also wheelchair-accessible. An hour away you will find New River Gorge National Park in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The premier whitewater rafting, ziplining, guided rock climbing, paddle boarding, kayaking, mountain biking and more make it well worth an hour’s drive. If you want to hit the slopes in the winter, over an hour away is Winterplace Ski Resort, a skiing destination for friends and family. With 27 trails for a variety of levels, 2 terrain parks, a 603-foot vertical drop, and an elevation of 3,600 feet, this mountain is the most ideal for skiing in proximity to Charleston. If you are willing to travel two more hours to Snowshoe Mountain, you can experience the largest ski area within 200 miles of Charleston. Here there are 251 skiable acres made up of 57 trails, 5 terrain parks, and 7 acres of glade skiing. For golf lovers, there are multiple courses to play on with your buddies! From Cato Park and Golf Course to Big Bend and Little Creek Golf Course, there are greens galore.
Charleston provides more entertainment for residents. For adult fun, you can drink up at different distilleries and breweries. Some include Mountain State Distillery, The Bullock Distillery, and Clendenin Brewing Company. You can even take a journey on Brewers Row as a fun activity! If you drink at least three beers at each brewery – Fife Street Brewing, Bad Shepherd Beer Company, and Short Story Brewing – you get stamps along the way and receive a free commemorative pint glass! If you want to experience live music, the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center hosts artists touring the nation. The Clay Center also has live performances whether it be music or theater, but it also has an art museum, a discovery museum, and a planetarium and theater. The Clay Center is dedicated to promoting the performing arts, visual arts, and sciences, and does so all under one roof. If live music doesn’t interest you, what about live baseball? The GoMart Park is home to the West Virginia Power, a minor league baseball team in the South Atlantic League. This is a great activity for families!
